dad and his evening ritual of walking the dog My dad has always been a stickler for routine, but his evening routine is particularly fixed - he takes our golden retriever for a walk after dinner every night without fail. It's a habit he's cultivated over many years, and I've come to respect and admire his dedication to it. Dad usually starts preparing for his walk as soon as the family finishes dinner. He puts on his sneakers, grabs a flashlight and a poop bag, and clips on Brownie's leash. Brownie wags his tail excitedly, his nose already twitching in anticipation of the outdoor smells he's about to experience. Dad is always in a cheerful mood during these walks, which is a nice change from his usual stoic demeanor. As they leave the house, I usually watch from the window as Dad and Brownie make their way down the block. They always follow the same path - down the tree-lined street, around the block, and back home. The other dogs in the neighborhood usually bark and wag their tails as they pass, and Dad always stops to say hello to their owners. These casual conversations are a way for him to connect with his community, and I've noticed that they have helped him feel more at home in our neighborhood. I've asked my dad why he insists on taking Brownie for a walk every night, and his answer is always the same: "It's good for both of us." I think he means this in more ways than one. On one hand, the regular exercise is beneficial for Brownie's health, and he enjoys the stimulation of exploring new scents and sights. On the other hand, I think the walks are also a way for my dad to decompress after a long day at work. By immersing himself in nature and enjoying the simple pleasures of a dog's company, he's able to forget about any work-related stressors and just focus on the present moment. Of course, my dad's evening ritual is not always convenient. There have been nights when it's raining or snowing, and dad has still taken Brownie out for a walk. And there have been times when he's come home late from work or other obligations, but he always makes sure to catch up on the walks later. I've come to appreciate the work and effort he puts in to this daily routine, and I think it's made me a more disciplined person as well. All in all, I believe that my dad's routine of walking the dog is a simple yet profound expression of his values. By prioritizing Brownie's health and well-being, he's also taking care of himself and strengthening his relationships with his community. I know that when I eventually have a pet of my own, I'll try to emulate my dad's commitment to daily walks and the joys they bring.
